Citrus Tree Care Guide: Frost Protection, Foot Rot & When to Pick

Citrus breaks nearly every rule the rest of this series has covered so far. It doesn’t need winter chill — it needs protection from cold. Most varieties don’t need a pollination partner. The fruit never ripens after picking, no matter how long it sits on the counter. And the fastest way to lose a young citrus tree is the one habit almost every other gardening guide encourages: piling mulch up against the trunk.

Five years on, “the lemon tree” tells you almost nothing, which is why I engrave a single acrylic plant stake with both the common and the scientific name and set it in the ground beside the trunk.

A Meyer lemon, a satsuma, and a Key lime all read as the same glossy green tree from ten feet away, yet the night that kills one barely registers on another, and the month you should be tasting for ripeness moves by half a year between them. 1. Planting depth — for a different reason than other fruit trees

Citrus has a graft point (the bud union) — but the reason to keep it high above the soil is different here. For citrus, the bud union sits well above the soil line specifically to keep the trunk dry, since citrus is highly susceptible to a fungal disease that thrives on wet bark at the base — see #10.

Why grafted at all?

Almost every citrus tree sold at a nursery is a named variety budded onto a separate rootstock, and there are good reasons for that. Citrus is unusual among fruit trees in that many types produce nucellar seed — seedlings that are genetic clones of the mother tree — so seed-grown citrus isn’t quite the genetic lottery a peach pit is. The problem is everything else that comes with a seedling. A citrus tree grown from seed goes through a long juvenile phase, commonly five to fifteen years before it flowers at all, and spends that time producing vicious thorns and an awkward, upright habit. It also carries none of the root traits a grower actually needs.

That’s what the rootstock supplies. Rootstock choice controls how large the tree gets, how well it tolerates your soil type and salinity, how much cold it can shrug off, and — most importantly for a backyard tree — how resistant the root system is to Phytophthora, the fungus behind foot rot. Trifoliate orange and its hybrids (Carrizo and Troyer citrange, Swingle citrumelo) are common because they add cold tolerance and root disease resistance and keep the tree to a manageable size. Sour orange rootstock was the historic standard in Florida until citrus tristeza virus made it a liability. The variety on top gives you the fruit; the rootstock underneath decides whether the tree survives your particular ground.

One practical consequence: any shoot that emerges below the bud union is rootstock, not your variety, and it should be cut off flush as soon as you see it. Trifoliate-based rootstocks are easy to spot — the leaves come in threes and the shoots are thorny.

2. Cold protection by region — this flips the usual chill-hour logic

Citrus has no chill requirement at all — it’s evergreen and subtropical, and cold is the enemy, not the missing ingredient.

Cold tolerance also varies a lot by type, which matters more than any other varietal decision you’ll make. Kumquats and satsuma mandarins are the toughest, shrugging off brief dips into the high teens once established. Meyer lemons, oranges, and grapefruit fall in the middle. Limes and citrons are the most tender of all — a night near freezing can damage fruit and young growth. If you’re at the edge of citrus country, that ranking is the whole ballgame.

By region

  • California (largest customer base): genuinely excellent citrus climate across most of the state. Coastal and Southern California grow nearly anything, though cool coastal summers can leave grapefruit less sweet than desert-grown fruit. Frost pockets in inland valleys and the foothills are the regional watch-item — cold air settles on valley floors overnight, so a slope or a south-facing wall is measurably safer than a low spot.
  • Florida: historically the classic American citrus state. The bigger modern concern is citrus greening disease (HLB), spread by the Asian citrus psyllid, which has devastated commercial groves since the mid-2000s — no cure; see #11. North Florida also sees occasional hard freezes.
  • Georgia: most of the state too cold outdoors, but south Georgia has seen real growth in cold-hardy satsuma and mandarin plantings.
  • Illinois and similar Midwest/Northeast climates (Ohio, New York, Missouri, Pennsylvania): outdoor citrus isn’t realistic — container growing, brought indoors for winter, is standard here. Meyer lemon, calamondin, and kumquat are the usual choices because they stay small and tolerate indoor light levels better than most.
  • Arizona and similar low-desert climates: unlike every other fruit category in this series, low-desert Arizona is one of the easier regions for citrus — a well-established backyard tradition in Phoenix and Tucson, often in the same yards where palms are already thriving. The trade-off is intense summer sun: exposed bark on a young or heavily pruned tree can sunburn badly.

3. Frost protection — what to actually do on a cold night

Most citrus loss happens on a handful of nights a year, and the response is simple enough that it’s worth knowing before the forecast turns. Water the soil a day ahead of a predicted freeze — moist soil holds and releases far more heat overnight than dry soil does. Then drape a frost cloth, blanket, or sheet over the tree so it reaches all the way to the ground on every side, which traps that rising ground heat under the cover. A cover that stops partway down the trunk does almost nothing. Stakes or a simple frame that keep the fabric off the foliage help, and old-style incandescent string lights under the cover add a few genuinely useful degrees.

Remove covers during the day so the tree gets light and the trunk dries out. Plastic sheeting is the common mistake — it conducts cold wherever it touches leaves and traps moisture against the bark. A temporary trunk wrap for an unusually hard freeze is reasonable, but it comes off as soon as the cold snap passes, for the reason covered in #10.

If a freeze does get through, resist the urge to clean up right away. Frost-damaged wood is hard to judge in winter, and the dead outer growth actually insulates what’s alive underneath. Wait until spring growth resumes and prune to where the tree tells you it’s still alive.

4. Pollination — most varieties don’t need a partner

Unlike apples and pears, which almost always need a compatible second variety nearby, most citrus is self-fertile — Meyer lemons, Bearss and Key limes, calamondin, and most oranges and mandarins will set fruit on a single tree. A few mandarin types set heavier crops with a pollinizer nearby, but that also means more seeds in the fruit, which is why seedless mandarins are often grown deliberately isolated.

A tree indoors or in a screened patio may set less fruit simply because nothing is moving the pollen. A gentle shake of the branches while it’s in bloom, or a soft brush passed flower to flower, is usually enough.

Knowing the exact variety you planted is worth recording somewhere permanent — “an orange tree” tells you very little five years later, while “Washington navel, planted spring 2026” tells you when to expect fruit and how the tree should behave in a cold snap.

5. Watering

Keep soil evenly moist — inconsistent watering causes flower and fruit drop. Let the top few inches dry between waterings rather than keeping the root zone constantly saturated. A young tree typically needs water more often than a mature one but in smaller volumes, since its root ball is still close to where it came out of the container.

Watering needs don’t stop once a tree is established — consistency matters year-round for citrus more than for deciduous fruit trees, since it never goes fully dormant. A mature tree still needs even moisture through bloom, fruit set, and the months fruit hangs on the tree before harvest — an unusually long window compared to deciduous fruit, since citrus doesn’t rush to ripen. The two windows that punish neglect hardest are spring bloom and fruit set, when drought stress causes the tree to shed flowers and pea-sized fruit outright, and the peak-heat stretch of mid-to-late summer, when swings between bone dry and soaked cause navel oranges and other thin-rind types to split. Deep, less frequent soakings that wet the whole root zone beat brief daily watering in every climate — and the water should soak in around the drip line, not pool against the trunk.

6. Sunlight and site

Full sun, and the warmest microclimate available — a south-facing wall spot helps in marginal, colder regions, since masonry absorbs heat during the day and releases it overnight. In the low desert, the priority reverses: young trees and any large limbs newly exposed by pruning benefit from shade cloth or a coat of diluted white latex paint on the bark, because sunburned trunks and scaffold limbs are one of the most common causes of long-term decline in Arizona citrus.

7. Fertilizing — timing matters more than amount

Feed several times during the growing season, starting late winter through mid-to-late summer. Stop fertilizing well before fall — late-season nitrogen makes new growth more vulnerable to frost damage.

Fertilizing needs stay fairly consistent year to year for citrus, unlike deciduous fruit trees that taper off as they mature — citrus is evergreen and always actively growing during the season, so a mature tree still benefits from the same multi-feeding schedule. What changes with maturity is dialing in amount based on canopy size and fruit load, not cutting back on principle. The autopilot risk here is the opposite of the deciduous one: rather than over-feeding a tree that no longer needs it, citrus growers tend to keep applying the same nitrogen blend for years while the actual limiting nutrient has quietly become something else. In the alkaline soils common across Arizona and inland California, iron and zinc lock up chemically and the tree shows it in the leaves long before growth slows. A soil test every few years, and a hard look at what the foliage is telling you each spring, is worth more than another round of the same bag.

8. Pruning

Citrus needs far less pruning than deciduous fruit trees, but it still benefits from two distinct phases, and they call for different things.

Years 1–3, structural pruning

The goal is a sound framework and nothing more. Choose three or four well-spaced scaffold branches, remove anything crossing or rubbing, and take out narrow, weak crotch angles that will split under a heavy fruit load later. Citrus naturally grows into a rounded, skirted shape and does not need a central-leader or open-center training system like apples or stone fruit. Resist thinning the interior for its own sake — citrus leaves feed the tree, and a young tree stripped of foliage in the name of airflow simply grows slower.

Year 3 onward, maintenance pruning

The work shifts to removing dead, damaged, or crossing wood, holding the tree to the size you want, and lifting the skirt just enough that low branches aren’t resting on wet soil or mulch. Citrus fruits on growth from the previous season, so heavy cutting trades away next year’s crop — light and regular beats hard and occasional. The usual timing is after harvest and before the spring flush, roughly late winter to early spring in mild-winter regions. Avoid pruning in autumn, which pushes tender new growth right into frost season, and if you do open up the canopy enough to expose bare limbs, whitewash them.

Suckers below the bud union and vigorous vertical water sprouts should come off as you notice them during the growing season, not saved for a once-a-year session. Rootstock suckers in particular steal vigor fast, and they’re easiest to remove while they’re still soft enough to rub off by hand.

9. Training forms and multi-grafted citrus

Two ideas come up constantly once someone has one citrus tree and wants more than one tree, or one variety, can give them. Both are older than the marketing around them, and both carry trade-offs the tag on the tree will not mention.

Citrus types inter-graft freely, and that compatibility is the whole reason a four-in-one citrus exists as a shelf product rather than a curiosity. One trunk carries separate limbs of, say, a lemon, a satsuma mandarin, a navel orange, and a lime, each budded on at its own point. Unlike a family apple tree, where the argument is usually pollination, a citrus multi-graft is not solving a pollination problem — most citrus is self-fertile already, as covered in #4. It is solving space and season.

Space matters more here than anywhere else in this series. Across Illinois, Ohio, New York, and everywhere else citrus lives in a pot and comes indoors for winter, the container is the tree. Four types on one trunk is four types in the one pot you can physically move through a doorway in November, which is a genuinely different proposition from four pots. The second benefit is timing: different citrus types sweeten at different points across the year, so one tree hands you fruit over months instead of in a single glut. Since citrus holds on the tree anyway, a well-chosen multi-graft can keep something pickable across most of the calendar.

The failure mode is vigor imbalance, and with citrus it is severe. Lemon is markedly more vigorous than almost anything you would graft beside it. Left to sort itself out, the lemon limb takes the light and the growth and progressively shades and starves the rest; the mandarin or the kumquat limb thins out quietly over two or three seasons and then it is gone. Managing that means cutting the strongest limb back harder than instinct says is reasonable, every single year. You are not pruning for shape, you are handicapping the fastest runner so the slow ones stay in the race. And a limb that dies is a variety lost permanently — it cannot regrow, because the wood below it is a different plant.

Two smaller things. A multi-grafted citrus has more graft unions to watch, so everything in #1 and #8 about rootstock suckers applies with more force: a shoot from below the lowest union is rootstock, and rootstock outruns every variety above it. And labeling stops being optional. Once the nursery tag fails, four glossy evergreen limbs look identical, and citrus does not even give you a bare winter silhouette to tell them apart by. Write down which limb is which while you still know.

Espalier, and why it does thermal work here

Espalier is training a tree to a flat plane against a wall, fence, or wire framework — horizontal tiered cordons, a fan, a candelabra. It is a traditional practice with centuries behind it, and citrus against a warm wall is one of the older versions of it. In this article it does something specific. A tree trained flat against a south- or west-facing masonry wall sits in radiated heat all night, the same effect described in #6, and in a marginal climate that is real frost buffering. In south Georgia or an inland California frost pocket, a fan-trained satsuma on a warm wall is not decoration, it is a few degrees, and a few degrees is the whole argument.

Two differences from the apple and pear espaliers most people picture. Citrus is evergreen, so a trained citrus is a year-round structure — foliage and often fruit on the wall in January, not a bare framework waiting on spring. And citrus fruits on the previous season’s growth rather than on long-lived spurs, so the rigid permanent tiers that suit a pear are a poorer fit here; a fan, with room to renew young wood, is the more forgiving form. Either way the shape is built by summer pruning, shortening the current season’s growth in the warm months. Winter cutting alone just answers with vigorous shoots. Dwarfing rootstock is close to essential, since a vigorous rootstock fights a flat plane forever.

Columnar trees deserve one line: genetically columnar habit is far better developed in apple than in citrus or any other fruit, and a narrow citrus is rootstock and pruning, not genetics.

10. The nuance almost everyone misses: don’t mulch or wrap the trunk

This runs directly against typical garden advice. Most trees benefit from mulch piled around the base. Citrus doesn’t — mulch or wraps that keep the trunk consistently damp are a common way citrus develops foot rot (Phytophthora).

  • Keep mulch several inches to a foot away from the trunk
  • Water so it soaks the root zone without pooling against the trunk
  • Skip trunk wraps except for active frost protection

Myth: mulching heavily around the base protects a young citrus tree. For most trees that’s good practice. For citrus, it’s one of the more common ways to accidentally kill one. Mulch out at the drip line is still worth having — it moderates soil temperature and holds moisture where the feeder roots actually are. It’s the last foot around the trunk that has to stay bare and dry.

11. Diagnosing problems

  • Gum oozing from the bark near the base, bark dark and water-soaked — foot rot; pull mulch and soil away from the trunk, move emitters away from the base, and let the bark dry out
  • Yellowing veins, lopsided or misshapen fruit, bitter taste, premature fruit drop (especially Florida) — possible citrus greening (HLB), spread by the Asian citrus psyllid; there is no cure, so buy certified nursery stock and don’t move plant material between regions
  • Leaves blackened or crisp after a cold night — frost damage; wait until spring growth resumes before pruning, since the dead outer wood insulates live tissue behind it
  • Flowers or small fruit dropping heavily — usually inconsistent watering; some natural drop after bloom is normal, but a sudden heavy shed usually traces back to the root zone drying out
  • New leaves yellow between green veins while older leaves stay dark — iron or zinc deficiency, common in alkaline western soils; treat with a chelated micronutrient rather than more nitrogen
  • Fruit splitting from the blossom end in late summer or autumn — irregular watering during rapid fruit sizing; steady deep soakings prevent it, and split fruit can’t be salvaged
  • Cracked, peeling bark on the south or west side of the trunk — sunburn, most often after heavy pruning or on a young desert-planted tree; shade or whitewash the exposed bark

12. Harvest — the one where color actively lies to you

Citrus is non-climacteric — it never ripens or sweetens after leaving the tree. Everything the fruit is ever going to become, it becomes while still attached, which makes rind color a poor guide and taste the only honest one.

  • Color can mislead in both directions — Valencia oranges can be fully ripe while still yellow-green, and citrus can also “regreen” in warm weather while the flesh inside stays sweet
  • The only reliable test is taste — pick from a sunny spot and a shady spot, taste both
  • There’s no rush — citrus can hang on the tree for weeks to months

Once picked

Since citrus never ripens further off the tree, the only goal after picking is slowing spoilage, not waiting for it to improve. Most citrus keeps at room temperature for about a week, or refrigerated for several weeks to a couple of months depending on the variety — thicker-skinned oranges and grapefruit generally outlast thin-skinned limes and mandarins. Cut the fruit off with clippers rather than pulling it, since a torn rind at the stem end is an open door for mold, and don’t wash fruit you plan to store. Because there’s no rush to pick the whole tree at once, many growers simply leave fruit on the tree and pick as needed, using it as a living refrigerator — worth knowing that navels lose texture and turn puffy if left too long past ripeness, while Valencias hold on the tree remarkably well.

Dooryard citrus routinely outlives the person who planted it, and unlike stone fruit, it rarely hits a sudden productive cliff — a well-sited tree keeps bearing for decades.

Citrus is almost always sold container-grown rather than bare-root, so the January-through-March bare-root window that governs apples and stone fruit doesn’t really apply. In mild-winter regions the usual advice is to plant in spring once frost danger has passed, giving the tree a full warm season to establish before its first winter — which makes late winter a good time to have the marker ready and waiting.
