Marker Care & Installation

An engraved marker has two things to survive: the ground it goes into, and whatever gets used to clean it. Neither is complicated, and neither is as fragile as people expect. But there is one mistake worth avoiding on each side, so this page covers both.

Cleaning engraved acrylic

Engraved acrylic takes its contrast from the material itself — a light core under a colored surface layer — not from paint or ink. Proper cleaning keeps your markers free of abrasions and cosmetic damage.

Use lukewarm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft cloth. Microfiber is ideal. Rinse and let it air dry or blot it. That is the whole method, and it handles dust, hard-water spots, drip-line mineral film and dried mud.

Wet it before you wipe it. This matters more than which cleaner you pick. A dry cloth on a dusty marker drags grit across the surface, and grit is harder than the plastic. Rinse first, always, and skip paper towels — wood pulp is abrasive enough to leave fine scratches on its own.

Why not glass cleaner

Here is the actual reason, because "do not use Windex on plastic" gets repeated a lot without anyone explaining it.

The damaging solvents named in the technical literature are acetone and alcohols — isopropyl and denatured alcohol especially — along with lacquer thinner and MEK. Ammonia is not really the villain in that list, despite getting most of the blame. The problem with glass cleaner is that most formulas are largely alcohol and glycol ether with a little ammonia in them. The ingredient people can name is not the one doing the damage.

Soap and water contains no solvent at all, which is why the question never comes up. Skip glass cleaner, acetone, rubbing alcohol, lacquer thinner and abrasive cleansers, and nothing else about cleaning needs thinking about.

For sap or adhesive residue, soak the marker in warm soapy water for ten minutes and let it release rather than scrubbing at it.

Cleaning aluminum and stainless

Anodized aluminum tags are more forgiving — no solvent concern at all. Soap, water and a soft cloth again, and a soft toothbrush is safe for working dirt out of deep engraving. Avoid steel wool and abrasive pads: they cut through the anodized layer, and where that layer is broken the bare aluminum underneath will dull to gray.

Stainless steel stakes can pick up surface rust spots from splash-back in a bed that gets iron-rich fertilizer or reclaimed water. A paste of baking soda and water on a cloth lifts it without scratching.

Setting a stake in hard ground

Two tone UV rated acrylic is impact-modified, not cast sheet. It is meaningfully more flexible and less brittle than the material most people picture when they hear "acrylic," and that is exactly why I use it for the part that goes in the ground. It gives a little rather than snapping.

What it is not is a chisel. Driving any stake into ground that will not open puts the whole load on the tip, and around here the ground often will not open. So the sequence below is less about protecting the marker than about the fact that you will not get it in otherwise.

  1. Water the spot thoroughly and wait. Not five minutes — give it several hours, or water in the evening and install in the morning. Dry desert soil sheds water at first, so a slow trickle does far more than a hard blast.
  2. Open a pilot hole with a screwdriver, a length of rebar, a masonry nail or a narrow bulb dibber. Work it in and rock it slightly to open the hole a little wider than the stake.
  3. Insert the stake by hand. Steady thumb pressure, straight down. There is no need to strike it with anything. If it will not go in by hand, the hole is not deep or wide enough — go back to step two rather than pushing harder.
  4. Firm the soil around the base with your fingers and water once more to settle it.

If you have a lot of markers to place, batch the pilot holes: walk the bed with the rebar first and open every hole, then come back through with the stakes.

What is actually under a Phoenix garden

The top foot of undisturbed soil around the Valley can be genuinely hard — hard enough that nothing goes into it dry. My own yard sits over a lot of caliche, and the first twelve inches take real effort.

The useful thing to know is that this layer responds to water. It is compacted soil mixed with carbonate material that never cemented into anything like concrete, and a slow, patient soak softens it. That is why step one above is watering and waiting, and why the waiting is the part that does the actual work. Most gardeners who conclude they have caliche in the top six inches have hard, dry, compacted ground instead — which is a solvable problem, not a permanent one.

True caliche hardpan is a different material, and it usually sits deeper than any marker will reach. It is soil cemented together by lime — calcium carbonate — showing up as a light-colored layer or as scattered white and cream-colored lumps, in layers from a few inches to several feet thick. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension is blunt about how it behaves: caliche, when softened with water, forms a kind of natural concrete. That layer has to be broken, not soaked. At stake depth you will rarely have to.

Choosing for your ground

Conditions What I would use

Through the year in the low desert

Summer. The materials handle it. What changes is the ground — from June until the first real storm it is at its hardest, and it is the worst time of year to install anything without watering first. If you can wait for the monsoon, the same stake goes in with a fraction of the effort.

Monsoon. Runoff moves markers. A stake set in soft, saturated soil can lean or lift when water channels past it. Walk the bed after the first big storm and press anything that has shifted back down while the ground is still soft.

Winter. The best window for anything that needs digging, and the season when bare-root fruit trees arrive. Label them as you plant them. Nursery tags are legible for one season and gone by the next, and by then nobody remembers which of the four peaches is the Desert Gold.
