Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) offers genuinely everything a native tree can offer in one plant — fragrant summer flowers prized by beekeepers, some of the best fall color of any native tree, and a graceful year-round form.

It's also one of the pickiest trees in this series about exactly one thing: soil chemistry.

Get that wrong, and no amount of good watering or sunlight will fix it. Nearly every sourwood that fails in a home landscape fails for that one reason, and it is a reason you can check before you ever dig the hole.

1. The nuance almost everyone misses: soil chemistry isn't optional

Myth: most native trees are adaptable to whatever soil you already have. True for a lot of natives — not this one. Sourwood is in the Ericaceae family, the same family as azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, and mountain laurel, and shares their signature requirement: acidic soil, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.8. It will not tolerate alkaline soil at all, and unlike western redbud covered earlier in this series — which specifically thrives in alkaline, clay soil — sourwood sits at the opposite extreme.

If azaleas or rhododendrons already struggle in a particular yard, sourwood will struggle for the same reason. A simple soil pH test before planting is worth far more here than for most trees in this series.

The reason pH matters so much comes down to iron. In acidic soil, iron stays in a form roots can absorb. Above roughly pH 7, iron locks up chemically — it is still physically present in the soil, but the tree cannot take it up, and the leaves go yellow between still-green veins. That is why adding iron to an alkaline site so rarely fixes anything for long. The problem was never a shortage of iron; it was the chemistry holding it out of reach. Sourwood also prefers soil rich in organic matter and well drained, which is exactly the woodland-edge profile it grows in naturally. 2. Regional fit — native range and soil chemistry together

By region:

  • California (largest customer base): outside sourwood's native range entirely, and much of California's soil trends alkaline. A genuinely difficult region unless a naturally acidic soil pocket is available. Coastal and Southern California face the alkalinity problem plus salty irrigation water; inland and foothill areas add hot, dry summers that this tree has no tolerance for.
  • Florida: native range extends into the Florida panhandle and north Florida, where acidic, well-drained soils are common. Peninsular/south Florida, more limestone-influenced, is a poorer match.
  • Georgia: squarely in the heart of sourwood's native range — the north Georgia mountains are classic sourwood honey country. The most reliable region in this article by a wide margin.
  • Illinois and similar Midwest/Northeast climates: native range extends into southern Illinois and up through Pennsylvania, hardy to roughly zone 5. Soil pH varies by location, so testing is still worth doing.
  • Arizona and similar low-desert climates: a poor fit on essentially every axis — alkaline desert soil, low humidity, none of the consistent moisture sourwood prefers. I live and work in Phoenix, and I will say plainly that this is not a tree I would plant here. A container of acidified media can keep one alive for a few seasons, but the soil chemistry wins in the end.

3. Sourcing and planting — this is not a tree to move twice

Sourwood has a reputation as one of the hardest native trees to transplant successfully, sensitive to root disturbance even when done carefully. Buy young, container-grown stock rather than field-dug or bare-root, and plant it in its permanent spot the first time. It is also sensitive to soil compaction and pollution, part of why it is rarely used as a street tree.

Why it is grown from seed rather than grafted

Fruit trees are grafted because they do not come true from seed and because rootstocks can be chosen to control size and disease resistance. Sourwood works differently. There is no commercial rootstock system for it, no dwarfing options, and no graft union to plant at a particular height — nursery sourwood is almost always seedling-grown from its own tiny seed, and cuttings are notoriously slow and unreliable to root. A handful of named selections exist, but most trees you will find are seedlings.

That matters at the moment of purchase in three practical ways. First, no graft union means no rootstock suckers to police and no depth-critical knuckle to keep above grade — plant so the root flare sits level with the surrounding soil and no deeper. Second, because seedlings vary, fall color intensity and flowering can differ noticeably from one tree to the next; if a specific autumn color is the point, buying in fall while the tree is actually coloring up is the only way to know what you are getting. Third, and most important, that fine, fragile root system is why wild-dug or field-dug sourwood so often dies. Digging a sourwood out of the woods sounds thrifty and almost never works. Container-grown nursery stock, small and young, transplanted with the root ball kept intact, is essentially the only reliable route to an established tree — and a smaller container plant will usually outgrow and outlive a larger one that had more roots disturbed.

Dig the hole wide rather than deep, loosen the sides, and backfill with the native soil you removed, improved with compost or pine bark fines if the ground is heavy. Skip lime entirely, at planting and forever after. Then mulch with 2 to 3 inches of pine bark, pine straw, or shredded leaves, pulled back a few inches from the trunk.

4. The summer bloom, wildlife, and pollinator value

Did you know? Sourwood's drooping clusters of small white summer flowers produce nectar that beekeepers across Appalachia consider among the finest in the world — sourwood honey is a genuine regional specialty product, single-source and short-season, with its own festival in Black Mountain, North Carolina. The flowers also draw butterflies, and the tree blooms later in summer than most natives in this series, extending the nectar season.

The bloom is the tree's peak season and its most predictable event. Panicles open in early to midsummer, typically June into July depending on latitude, and hang in long curved sprays from the branch tips. The flowers form on the current season's growth, which is why pruning timing matters — more on that below. Bloom is heaviest on trees in full sun; a sourwood tucked into deep shade will still grow well and color beautifully in fall, but it will flower sparsely.

Did you know? The flower sprays look so much like lily-of-the-valley that sourwood picked up lily-of-the-valley tree as an alternate common name in parts of its range. It is a helpful identification cue in midsummer, when little else that size is blooming in white.

5. Watering — establishment and long term

Sourwood prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil — not waterlogged, but not allowed to dry out completely. It is not strongly drought-tolerant once established, part of why it struggles in hot, dry climates regardless of soil chemistry.

For the first two or three years, water deeply once or twice a week in the absence of rain, aiming to wet the full root ball rather than sprinkling the surface. Check by pushing a finger 2 to 3 inches into the soil under the mulch before watering again.

Here is where sourwood departs from most of the trees in this series: the watering does not really taper off. Its roots are shallow and fine, concentrated in the top foot or so of soil rather than driving deep, so a mature sourwood has less of a moisture reserve to fall back on than an established oak or redbud of the same age. In a normal season with regular rain, a mature tree in the right region needs nothing from you. In a dry stretch of three or four weeks, a mature sourwood will show stress — crisp leaf margins, early leaf drop, sometimes a washed-out fall color that year — while more drought-tolerant neighbors carry on unbothered. Deep soakings during extended dry spells, every 10 to 14 days, are worth it for the life of the tree. A maintained mulch ring does more for a mature sourwood than for almost any other tree here, because it protects exactly the shallow root layer this species depends on.

6. Sunlight and site

Full sun brings out the best flowering and fall color, though partial shade is tolerated and can help prevent leaf scorch in hotter climates. In the wild, sourwood most often grows at woodland edges and in openings, which is a good model for a home site: open to the sky overhead, sheltered from harsh reflected heat and drying wind. Keep it away from fresh concrete, masonry foundations, and newly poured walkways — lime leaches out of concrete for years and steadily raises the pH of the soil right beside it, which is the one condition this tree cannot survive.

7. Fertilizing — and what to keep away from the root zone

Minimal feeding for an established tree. If fertilizing, use a formula made for acid-loving plants, the same kind sold for azaleas, rhododendrons, and blueberries. Skip fertilizer entirely in the planting year and let the roots settle first; a light application in early spring, before the flush of new growth, is plenty for the first several years.

What changes with maturity is mostly that the tree needs even less. A mature sourwood growing in genuinely acidic soil, mulched with pine bark or leaf litter that breaks down and feeds it slowly, often needs no fertilizer at all. Sourwood is naturally slow-growing, and pushing it with nitrogen does not speed it up in any useful way — it produces soft, weak growth that the shallow root system struggles to support through summer heat.

Two common lawn-care products are actively harmful here, and both work by the same mechanism. Lime is applied to lawns specifically to raise soil pH, which is the exact opposite of what sourwood needs; a single lime application over the root zone can undo years of good soil management. Standard lawn fertilizers are formulated for turfgrass, which prefers a near-neutral pH, and many combination lawn products include lime or other pH-raising components alongside the nitrogen. Even the ones that do not raise pH deliver far more nitrogen than this tree wants. If a sourwood is growing in or near a lawn, keep a mulched ring well outside the drip line and keep the spreader out of it. Acidifying products such as elemental sulfur or an ammonium-sulfate-based acid fertilizer can help nudge a marginally alkaline site downward, but see the myth above — they manage a problem rather than solve it.

8. Pruning — two phases, both light

Sourwood needs less pruning than nearly any tree in this series. It develops a graceful, slightly irregular pyramidal form on its own, and the most common pruning mistake is doing too much rather than too little. Still, the goals change as the tree ages.

Years 1–3, structural pruning

The aim is a single dominant leader and a clean framework, nothing more. Remove any competing second leader while it is small, take out branches that cross and rub, and clear anything broken or damaged in transit or transplanting. Resist the urge to shape the canopy — the slight lean and irregular branching that make a mature sourwood beautiful start showing up in these years, and pruning for symmetry removes exactly what you want to keep. On a young tree, a few cuts a year is normal.

Year 3 onward, maintenance pruning

This is dead, damaged, and diseased wood only, plus the occasional rubbing branch or low limb that has to come off for clearance. Many years there will be nothing to do at all. Where the lower branches sweep close to the ground, leaving them is generally better for the tree than limbing up for tidiness, since that shallow root system benefits from the shade and the leaf litter beneath the canopy.

Timing

Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant, before growth breaks. Because the flowers form on the current season's growth, dormant pruning does not cost you that summer's bloom — but cutting in late spring or early summer removes the very shoots that were about to carry the flower panicles, and it takes the fall color of those branches with them. Avoid pruning in early fall as well, which can push tender growth into the first freeze. Late winter is the safe window, and for a tree this light on pruning needs, it is the only session most years require.

9. After the bloom — seed capsules, fall color, and winter care

Sourwood does not produce fruit to harvest, but it has a distinct after-bloom season that is worth knowing, because much of what makes this tree worth planting happens between August and the first hard freeze.

The seed capsules

As the summer flowers fade, each one becomes a small dry capsule, and the drooping sprays stay on the tree — turning from green to a pale silver-gray and holding their curved, upswept shape. They persist well into winter, long after the leaves are gone, which gives the bare tree a fine-textured silhouette that is one of its quieter assets. There is nothing to do about them. Do not deadhead the spent panicles; you would be cutting into next year's growth points, and the capsules are part of the winter show.

The fall color sequence

Sourwood colors early, often starting in late summer while everything else is still green — a few branches turning first, then the canopy following through scarlet and crimson into deep burgundy and purple-red. On many trees the silver seed capsules are still hanging while the leaves are at peak color, and that combination is the single best argument for planting one. Color is strongest on trees in full sun and on trees that did not go through drought stress in August; a dry late summer routinely produces a muted, browned-out fall.

Leaf litter is doing real work

Sourwood leaves are acidic as they break down, and letting them stay under the canopy slowly maintains the low pH the tree needs. Raking them away and replacing them with a neutral or alkaline mulch works against the tree year after year. My standing recommendation is to leave the fallen leaves in place under the canopy, or rake them into the mulch ring rather than to the curb, and top up with pine bark or pine straw if more cover is wanted.

Winter care for young trees

For the first two or three winters, water deeply once before the ground freezes if fall has been dry — winter desiccation on a shallow-rooted young tree is a real risk. Keep the mulch layer at 2 to 3 inches and away from direct contact with the trunk, which discourages voles from sheltering against the bark. Protect the thin young trunk from string trimmers and mowers, since bark damage low on the stem is a common and entirely avoidable cause of decline. Do not fertilize in fall. Mature sourwood needs no winter protection at all within its hardiness range.

10. Diagnosing problems

  • Yellowing leaves with green veins still visible (iron chlorosis) — almost always a sign the soil pH is too high; traces directly back to #1. Test the soil pH rather than guessing, and check for a nearby lime source such as a concrete foundation, a limed lawn, or hard alkaline irrigation water. A chelated iron application will green the leaves up for a season, but the pH is the actual fix.
  • Overall decline after a recent move — transplant stress; recovery can take longer than expected given this species' sensitivity. Expect a sparse, small-leaved first season even on a successful transplant. Keep the root ball evenly moist, mulch it, hold off on fertilizer entirely, and remove any flower panicles the first summer so the tree spends its energy on roots. Do not dig it up again to check on it.
  • Crisp brown leaf margins and edges, often with early leaf drop in late summer — drought scorch on a shallow-rooted tree. Distinguish it from chlorosis by the pattern: scorch browns the outer edges and tips while the leaf center stays green, whereas chlorosis yellows the tissue between veins. Water deeply and slowly, widen the mulch ring, and expect a duller fall color that year.
  • Stalled growth and thin canopy on a tree surrounded by lawn — root competition from turfgrass. Turf roots occupy the same shallow layer sourwood depends on and out-compete it for both water and nitrogen, and lawn care over that zone usually adds a lime or high-nitrogen problem on top. Clear the turf back to a mulched ring at least out to the drip line rather than mowing to the trunk.
  • Sudden wilting of an entire branch or the whole young tree in wet soil — likely root rot from poor drainage. Sourwood wants consistent moisture but not standing water; heavy clay that holds water is as much a problem as drought.
  • Few insect or disease problems otherwise — genuinely low-maintenance once in the right soil and left undisturbed.

11. Long-term health

Sourwood is slow-growing, which tests patience early on, but rewards it with a long-lived, low-maintenance specimen tree once established in the right soil. Getting the site right at planting matters more for this species than for almost anything else in this series, since there is very little room to correct course later.
