Rose Care Guide: Own-Root vs. Grafted, and Why Planting Depth Flips by Climate

If you're growing roses, there's a good chance you didn't just buy "a rose" — you bought a named variety from a breeder: a David Austin English rose, a Kordes, a Meilland, a Weeks.

That's worth knowing up front, because modern rose breeding has changed what actually matters for care more than almost any other plant in this series. And the single most contradicted piece of planting advice out there — how deep to plant it — genuinely depends on where you live, in the opposite direction from what you'd expect.

The bud union that must sit safely above the soil on a fruit tree is the same bud union that needs to be buried several inches down on a rose in Illinois, and left at the surface on the same rose in San Diego.

Rose growers have been tying the name onto the cane for a century, and that's still how I'd label a bed of them — engraved hanging tags, six to a pack.

In winter a bed of twenty roses is twenty near-identical sets of thorny canes, and the pruning class behind each name is the difference between a once-blooming gallica you cut after it flowers and a repeat-blooming floribunda you cut hard in late winter — guess wrong and you lose that year's flowers. A QR code can be engraved on the tag alongside the cultivar name, and scanning it opens this guide right there in the bed.

Did you know? Kordes, one of the breeders behind many modern garden roses, participates in a German testing program called ADR, where new varieties are grown for three full years under harsh conditions with zero spraying or disease treatment. Only roses that come through healthy earn the designation — over 1,500 varieties have been tested since the program began more than 60 years ago.

1. Own-root vs. grafted — the choice that shapes everything else

Most modern roses are sold one of two ways:

  • Grafted (budded) roses join a desirable variety onto a separate, more vigorous rootstock — faster establishment, bigger blooms, but a vulnerable bud union that needs specific protection depending on climate (see #2).
  • Own-root roses are grown entirely on their own roots. They establish more slowly at first, but any growth from the base is always the same variety, there's no bud union to protect, and if the top dies back in a hard winter, it regrows true to type.

Neither is strictly better — grafted roses often win in vigor and bloom size, own-root roses win in cold-hardiness and long-term reliability. Many named breeder varieties are available both ways.

Why bud a rose onto a rootstock at all?

Two reasons, and neither is about the flower. The first is production speed: a bud chip set into a rootstock in summer produces a saleable, field-grown plant in about two seasons, where a cutting grown on its own roots takes longer to reach the same size. The second is that the rootstock supplies a root system suited to ground the variety's own roots would struggle in — heavier soil, alkaline soil, drought, or soil-borne pests. The variety on top (the scion) supplies the bloom; the rootstock supplies the roots.

The rootstocks you're most likely to have bought

  • 'Dr. Huey' — the dominant rootstock in American field production, particularly for West Coast growers. It is vigorous in dry western soils and easy to bud, but it is only moderately cold-hardy, and it is the rootstock most commonly seen taking over a plant. Its own flower is a dark crimson, semi-double, once-blooming spring flower with a small white eye — if that shows up on a rose you bought as something else, the rootstock has won.
  • Rosa multiflora — widely used in the Midwest and East, more cold-tolerant than Dr. Huey and quick to establish. Worth noting that R. multiflora is a serious invasive species across much of the eastern United States, and it is also the main wild reservoir for rose rosette disease (see #10).
  • Rosa fortuniana — the Florida and Gulf Coast answer. Sandy southern soils carry root-knot nematodes that quietly destroy rose root systems, and fortuniana is resistant to them. Roses on fortuniana in Florida routinely outlive and outperform the same cultivar on Dr. Huey by a wide margin. If you garden in Florida or coastal Georgia, it's worth seeking out a supplier who grafts on fortuniana specifically rather than buying whatever the big-box rack carries.

How to tell which one you actually bought

Look at the base of the plant, at or just below where the canes start. A grafted rose has a bud union: a distinctly swollen, knobby knuckle where all the canes radiate out from a single point, with the roots below it. An own-root rose has no knuckle — canes emerge from the crown and roots come off the base directly, with a smooth transition instead of a swelling. On a bare-root plant this is obvious in the hand. On a potted plant you may need to scrape back an inch of soil. Most reputable specialty growers state which they are selling on the tag or the invoice; large field growers producing bare-root stock generally bud onto rootstock, while smaller specialty nurseries more often sell own-root. If it isn't stated, ask before you buy — it changes how you plant, how you protect the plant in winter, and whether you'll ever need to watch for suckers.

Did you know? The name on a rose tag usually isn't the plant's registered name. Breeders register a cultivar under a code name — a denomination — and then sell it under a marketable trade name that often differs from country to country. Meilland codes begin with MEI, Kordes with KOR, Harkness with HAR. The best-known example is the rose sold in the United States as 'Peace', whose registered name is 'Madame A. Meilland', bred by Francis Meilland in France and introduced in the U.S. in 1945 as the war in Europe ended. If you ever go looking for a rose you loved years ago and can't find it under the name you remember, the code name is usually what finds it — which is also a good argument for engraving both names on the tag.

2. Bud union depth by region — this reverses the usual grafting rule

Myth: like other grafted plants covered in this series, the graft union should always be planted above the soil line. For apple trees and stone fruit, that's consistently true — the union stays one to two inches proud of the soil in every climate. For roses it is not a universal rule at all. In cold-winter regions the bud union goes below the soil line on purpose, because the union is the least cold-hardy point on the plant and burying it is the cheapest insurance there is. Same plant part, opposite instruction, and the difference is entirely climate.

By region:

  • California (largest customer base): coastal/Southern CA plant the bud union at or just above soil level. Colder inland/higher-elevation areas benefit from the union sitting closer to or slightly below soil level.
  • Florida: warm-climate planting — bud union at or just below soil level, mainly for heat protection. Fortuniana rootstock is common for the Gulf Coast's heat, humidity, and nematode pressure.
  • Georgia: similar warm-climate logic, with humidity-driven disease pressure the bigger regional concern (see #10).
  • Illinois and similar Midwest/Northeast climates: classic cold-climate territory — plant the bud union 2–4 inches below soil, mound extra mulch after first hard frost. Own-root roses have a real practical advantage here.
  • Arizona and similar low-desert climates: warm-climate planting depth applies, but for heat buffering rather than cold protection, similar to citrus earlier in this series.

3. Choosing a disease-resistant variety

This matters more for roses than almost anything else in this series, because rose breeding has spent decades specifically working on it. If black spot or powdery mildew has been a problem, choosing a variety bred for disease resistance (many David Austin and Kordes varieties, including anything with an ADR designation) solves more of the problem before planting than spraying afterward.

Did you know? David Austin spent over a decade breeding before his first real success — 'Constance Spry,' released in 1961 — combining the fragrance and old-fashioned form of antique roses with the repeat-blooming reliability of modern varieties. That cross created the English Rose category.

Two roses want something other than a tag on a cane. A standard or tree rose carries its head on one bare trunk, with nothing low down to tie onto. And a rose planted for an anniversary or in someone's memory is there to be read by whoever comes to see it, not just by the person holding the pruners. For those I'd set the name in the ground beside the plant — a single engraved stake carrying the variety and the botanical name.

4. Watering

Deep, consistent watering rather than frequent shallow watering — roughly an inch of water per week during the growing season, applied at the base rather than overhead, since wet foliage encourages black spot and powdery mildew.

Watering doesn't stop after establishment; it changes shape. A mature rose still wants the equivalent of one to two inches of water a week through the growing season, delivered in a small number of long soakings rather than a daily sprinkle. The target is moisture down to 15–18 inches, where the working roots are. Shallow, frequent watering trains roots to stay in the top few inches of soil, which is exactly the layer that dries out fastest and heats up most — a rose watered that way looks fine in May and wilts every afternoon in July. Push a soil probe or a long screwdriver into the bed an hour after watering; if it slides in easily to the length of your hand, the soaking went deep enough.

Why overhead watering is the specific problem. Black spot spores need a film of liquid water sitting on a leaf for several hours to germinate and infect. Sprinklers, hose-end wands aimed at the canopy, and evening watering all supply exactly that. A soaker hose or drip line at the base removes the mechanism entirely, which is why a bed on drip in a humid climate can stay noticeably cleaner than an identical bed on overhead irrigation. If overhead watering is unavoidable, water early in the morning so foliage dries within a couple of hours, never at dusk.

The windows that matter most across the season:

  • Spring, as new growth pushes and the first flush sets buds — drought stress here shrinks that year's best bloom, and it's the flush most gardeners actually plan around.
  • Between flushes on repeat bloomers — a rose rebuilding for its next cycle needs steady moisture. Letting it dry hard between flushes is the most common reason a repeat bloomer only blooms once.
  • Peak summer heat — in Arizona, inland California, and the low desert generally, roses often need deep watering two to three times a week through the worst of summer, and will still slow down and shed leaves. That semi-dormancy is normal and not a watering failure.
  • Late autumn — taper off as growth slows, but don't let a rose go into a cold winter in bone-dry soil. Roots dehydrate in frozen ground, and a deep watering before the ground freezes measurably reduces winter dieback.

A 2–3 inch mulch layer, kept a few inches back from the crown and canes so the base can breathe, holds moisture between waterings and keeps soil-splash — the main delivery route for black spot spores from the ground back onto the leaves — off the lower foliage.

5. Sunlight and site

Full sun, at least six hours daily, with good airflow. Crowded plantings that trap humidity are one of the most common causes of disease pressure, especially in the humid Southeast. In the low desert, the exception worth making is afternoon shade — roses in Phoenix and Tucson perform better with morning sun and relief from the west-facing afternoon exposure than they do with a full unbroken day of it.

6. Fertilizing

Feed through the active growing season, but taper off before the stress season hits — before first hard frost in cold climates, before peak summer heat in hot ones.

Repeat bloomers feed on a cycle, not a schedule you set once and forget. A modern hybrid tea, floribunda, or English rose is being asked to build an entire new set of flowering shoots several times a season, and that is genuinely demanding. Start the first feeding in spring once new growth is four to six inches long — not at bud break, and never on a newly planted bare-root rose that hasn't leafed out, which has no root system yet to take it up. From there, feed after each bloom flush finishes, which usually works out to roughly every four to six weeks. Water thoroughly before and after feeding; fertilizer applied to dry soil is how roots get burned.

When to stop. In cold-winter regions, stop feeding six to eight weeks before your average first hard frost — early August in much of the upper Midwest and Northeast, late August further south. Nitrogen applied after that pushes soft new growth that has no time to harden off, and soft growth is what dies back first and worst in a hard freeze. In the low desert the equivalent pause is midsummer: don't push a rose to produce new growth into 110-degree heat when it's trying to shut down. Resume light feeding in early September as things cool, which sets up the strong autumn flush that's often the best bloom of the desert year.

The autopilot risk. Not every rose is a heavy feeder. Once-blooming old garden roses, most species roses, and many tough landscape shrub roses need one spring feeding and nothing else — feeding them on a hybrid tea schedule produces leggy, soft, disease-prone growth and no extra flowers, because they aren't capable of a second flush no matter what you give them. Own-root roses in their first two years also want a lighter hand than an established grafted plant. If a rose is already growing vigorously with dark green foliage and blooming well, skipping a feeding is a better decision than adding one. A soil test every three or four years tells you more than any bag label does.

7. Pruning and deadheading

Pruning roses happens in two distinct phases, and the class of rose you're holding decides both the timing and the severity. Getting the class wrong is how people accidentally cut off an entire year of bloom.

Years 1–2, structural and establishment pruning

A new rose is building a framework, and the goal is a strong, open, outward-facing structure rather than maximum flowers. Remove anything dead, damaged, or thinner than a pencil. Take out canes that cross through the center or rub against each other, and open the middle so light and air reach the interior — the same airflow logic that reduces disease later. Keep three to five healthy main canes and let them thicken. Resist hard-pruning a first-year plant beyond that: young roses need leaf area to build roots, and cutting them back severely in year one slows establishment. Cutting long stems for the vase in year one costs the same leaf area, so take short stems if you take any.

Year 2 onward, annual maintenance pruning

Now the annual cycle starts. Every cut is made about a quarter inch above an outward-facing bud eye, at a slight angle, so new growth heads away from the center of the plant. Remove dead and diseased wood first, then any remaining crossing canes, then reduce what's left according to class. Take out the oldest, woodiest, least productive canes at the base every few years so the plant keeps renewing itself rather than accumulating unproductive wood.

How pruning differs by class — this is the part that matters

  • Hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas: these bloom on new wood, so they take the hardest pruning. In late winter or early spring, reduce to three to five strong canes and cut back to roughly 12–24 inches — shorter in cold regions where you're cutting to live wood anyway, taller in mild climates where more of the plant survives winter.
  • Shrub and English roses: lighter treatment. Reduce overall height by about a third to a half depending on how compact you want the plant, and thin out weak or crowded growth. Hard-pruning an English rose to hybrid tea height every year produces a smaller, less graceful plant than the breeder intended.
  • Once-blooming old garden roses — gallicas, damasks, albas, centifolias, mosses — and once-blooming ramblers: these bloom on old wood, meaning the flowers you'll get this June formed on canes that grew last year. Do not hard-prune them in late winter. Doing so removes the entire year's bloom, and the plant will look healthy while producing almost nothing. Prune these right after they finish flowering in early summer instead, thinning out old canes at the base and shortening what remains.
  • Repeat-blooming climbers: the main canes are the permanent structure and should not be cut back hard. Train them as close to horizontal as the plant allows — horizontal canes break more buds along their length and flower far more heavily than vertical ones. In late winter, prune the side shoots (laterals) coming off those main canes back to two or three buds, and only remove a whole main cane when it's genuinely old and unproductive.

Regional timing

The traditional cue is to prune when forsythia blooms locally, which tracks real soil warming better than a calendar date. In practice: January in coastal and Southern California, low-desert Arizona, and much of Florida, where roses barely pause. Mid-February to early March across Georgia and the mid-South. Late March into April in Illinois, Ohio, New York, Missouri, and Pennsylvania — wait until the worst freezes have passed, because pruning early stimulates growth that the next hard freeze will kill. Pruning slightly late costs you a week of bloom; pruning too early can cost you canes.

Deadheading through the season

On repeat-flowering roses, removing spent blooms redirects energy from seed production back into the next flush, and it's the single easiest thing you can do to extend bloom. On hybrid teas and floribundas, cut back to the first outward-facing five-leaflet leaf below the spent flower rather than snipping the flower head off at the neck — that lower point has a bud eye strong enough to produce a proper new flowering stem. On shrub, landscape, and English roses carrying dozens of small blooms, light shearing over the whole plant is faster and works fine. Once-blooming roses gain nothing from deadheading, since there's no second flush coming.

8. Bloom season and seasonal aftercare

What you do after the flowers is what sets up next year, and roses give you more decisions here than most plants do.

Deadheading vs. leaving hips. Deadheading keeps a repeat bloomer flowering. But hips — the seed capsules a rose forms when a spent flower is left on the plant — have their own value. They feed birds through winter, they're genuinely ornamental on species roses, rugosas, and many old garden roses that produce large red hips, and on some shrub roses they're the best autumn feature the plant has. The decision is simple: deadhead through the main season if you want maximum flowers, then stop and let the last flush set hips if you want the winter interest. On a once-blooming rose, leave the hips — you're giving up nothing.

Did you know? Rose hips are a significant source of vitamin C, and Britain organized nationwide hip collection during the Second World War, when imported citrus was largely unavailable. Volunteers, schoolchildren among them, gathered wild hips that were processed into rose hip syrup and distributed as a vitamin supplement.

When to stop deadheading in autumn. Roughly six weeks before your average first hard frost, stop deadheading and stop cutting flowers. Letting the last blooms form hips signals the plant to slow down and harden its wood for winter, and hardened canes survive cold far better than soft, actively growing ones. Continuing to deadhead into October in a cold climate keeps pushing tender new shoots at exactly the wrong time. In frost-free coastal California, low-desert Arizona, and South Florida this doesn't apply the same way — those roses keep going, and the annual reset comes at the winter pruning instead.

Winter protection, by how cold it actually gets:

  • Mild climates — coastal and Southern California, Florida, low-desert Arizona: no winter protection at all. Skip the mounding, skip the cones. Covering a rose that isn't going dormant traps heat and moisture and does more harm than the cold would.
  • Cold-winter regions — Illinois, Ohio, New York, Missouri, Pennsylvania: mounding is the standard method. After the ground has taken several hard frosts and the plant is dormant — not before, or you'll trap warmth and invite rot — mound 10–12 inches of loose soil or compost over the base and bud union. Bring the mounding material in from elsewhere rather than scraping soil away from the rose's own root zone. Remove the mound gradually in spring as hard freezes end. Tie tall canes loosely together first so winter wind doesn't rock the plant and open a gap at the crown.
  • Severe cold, roughly zone 4 and colder: the Minnesota tip is the traditional method for tender hybrid teas — loosen the roots on one side, tip the whole plant over into a trench dug beside it, and bury it completely for winter, uprighting it in spring. It's real work, and it's the reason many gardeners in that range simply grow own-root and hardy shrub roses instead, which need no such treatment.

Cutting blooms for the vase. Cut in early morning when the canes are fully hydrated, not in afternoon heat. Take the stem just above an outward-facing five-leaflet leaf, and leave at least two sets of leaves on the portion of stem remaining on the plant — that leaf area is what fuels the next flush, and stripping a plant of long stems repeatedly weakens it. Carry a bucket of water into the garden and put stems in it immediately; recut each stem underwater at an angle before arranging, strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline, and change the water every couple of days. Roses cut just as the outer petals begin to unfurl open fully in the vase and last longer than ones cut wide open.

Whatever you decide about hips and winter cover, it's worth being certain which cultivar you're deciding it for — the pruning class and the hardiness both hang on the name. That's more than one line of information, and the three-line tag gives you a line each for the cultivar, the breeder, and the year it went in the ground.

9. The nuance almost everyone misses: sucker growth from the rootstock

On a grafted rose, shoots sometimes emerge from below the bud union — these come from the rootstock, not the variety purchased, and look different: different leaf shape, color, sometimes prickle pattern. Left alone, suckers can outcompete and eventually take over the entire plant.

  • Check below the bud union periodically for visibly different shoots
  • Remove suckers at their point of origin on the rootstock, not partway up
  • This only applies to grafted roses — own-root roses have no rootstock to sucker from

Pull rather than cut where you can. Trace the sucker down to where it joins the rootstock, clear the soil away, and tear it off at the origin — a clean pruner cut partway up leaves dormant buds behind that simply send up two more next season. A sucker grows faster than the named variety, which is why the takeover usually finishes in two or three seasons: the rootstock outgrows the scion, shades it, and the variety quietly starves out.

10. Diagnosing problems

  • Black or dark brown leaf spots with fringed edges, surrounded by yellowing, starting on lower leaves — black spot, the defining rose disease of humid climates. Cause: fungal spores germinating in water sitting on the leaf, splashed up from soil or wet foliage. Fix: water at the base only, clear fallen infected leaves out of the bed rather than composting them in place, mulch to block soil splash, open the plant up for airflow at pruning, and if it's chronic, replace the worst offenders with disease-resistant varieties rather than committing to a spray schedule forever.
  • White, powdery coating on new leaves and buds, often with distorted growth — powdery mildew. Cause: warm days with cool, humid nights, and unlike black spot it doesn't need standing water on the leaf. Fix: airflow and spacing first, morning sun exposure so foliage dries early, avoid heavy nitrogen that pushes the soft new growth mildew prefers, and prune out badly affected shoots.
  • Orange or rusty-brown powdery pustules on the undersides of leaves, with yellow flecking on top — rose rust. Cause: a fungus favored by cool, moist conditions, most common along the Pacific coast and in mild damp springs. Fix: remove and bin affected leaves promptly, avoid overhead watering, clean up all fallen foliage in autumn since the fungus overwinters on debris and canes.
  • Rapid distorted growth: bright red elongated shoots, clustered witches'-broom growth, abnormally soft excessive prickles, deformed buds that never open properlyrose rosette disease, caused by a virus spread by a microscopic eriophyid mite that drifts on wind. There is no cure and the plant will die. Fix: remove the entire plant including as much of the root system as you can, bag it, and dispose of it — do not compost it, and do not prune around it hoping to save the plant, because the virus is systemic. Remove any wild Rosa multiflora growing nearby, which is the main reservoir. Wait before replanting a rose in the same spot. This is the one rose problem where acting fast protects your neighbors' plants as well as the rest of your own bed.
  • Dense clusters of small soft green, pink, or black insects on new shoot tips and flower buds, with sticky residue and sometimes black sooty mold below — aphids. Cause: fast soft spring growth, often made worse by heavy nitrogen feeding. Fix: a firm jet of water knocks them off and is usually enough; ladybugs and lacewings do most of the rest if you aren't spraying broad-spectrum insecticides that kill them too. Aphids are cosmetic on an otherwise healthy rose, not a threat to the plant.
  • Brown or scorched petal edges, streaked or flecked buds that open lopsided or fail to open — worst on white, cream, and pale pink varieties — thrips, tiny slender insects that feed inside the developing bud. Fix: remove and dispose of affected buds rather than dropping them in the bed, keep spent blooms and weedy flowering growth cleared nearby, and accept that thrips are difficult to eliminate outdoors. Damage is nearly always cosmetic, and dark-colored varieties show it far less.
  • A dark crimson, semi-double, once-blooming flower appearing on a plant you bought as something else, on long arching canes from low on the plant — 'Dr. Huey' rootstock takeover. Cause: suckers below the bud union were never removed, or the scion died in a hard winter and only the rootstock survived. Fix: if the named variety is still present above the union, remove the rootstock growth at its origin (see #9). If the whole plant is now Dr. Huey, the original cultivar is gone and no pruning brings it back — replace it, and consider own-root next time.
  • No new growth from the base after a hard winter, on a grafted rose — possible bud union loss to cold damage. Cause: the union was planted too shallow for the climate or left unprotected. Fix: none for that plant, but it's the direct argument for the depth guidance in #2 and mounding in #8.

11. Long-term health

A well-matched variety planted at the correct depth for the region is most of what determines whether a rose is rewarding and low-maintenance or a constant battle with disease and dieback. Starting with the right variety does more long-term work than any single care habit afterward. Roses are also genuinely long-lived when the basics hold — a healthy own-root shrub rose or a grafted plant whose union has been protected and whose suckers have been managed can be productive for decades, far longer than the three-to-five-year replacement cycle many gardeners assume is normal.

Read that depth column top to bottom and the reversal is the whole story: the same bud union that stays at the surface in San Diego, Orlando, and Phoenix goes two to four inches underground in Chicago — on the same cultivar, from the same grower, for opposite reasons.

Should I plant my rose's bud union above or below the soil?

It depends entirely on climate, and the rule is the opposite of most grafted plants. In cold-winter regions like Illinois, Ohio, New York, Missouri, and Pennsylvania, set the bud union 2–4 inches below the soil line to protect it from freeze damage. In mild and hot climates — coastal California, Florida, Georgia, low-desert Arizona — plant it at or just above soil level. Fruit trees keep their graft union above ground everywhere; roses do not.

Why does my grafted rose look different than the one I bought?

Most likely the rootstock took over. Shoots from below the bud union belong to the rootstock, not the variety you chose, and they grow faster than the scion. In the U.S. the usual culprit is 'Dr. Huey', which produces a dark crimson, semi-double, once-blooming flower on long arching canes. Once the original variety is gone, no pruning brings it back — the fix is prevention: remove suckers at their point of origin as soon as you see them.

Should I choose own-root or grafted?

Grafted roses establish faster and often bloom bigger, which suits warm climates and gardeners who want results in the first season. Own-root roses are slower to start but never sucker, never lose their identity, and regrow true to variety if the top dies back in a hard winter — which makes them the more reliable long-term choice in cold regions. In Florida the calculation is different again: a rose grafted onto Rosa fortuniana resists the nematodes that shorten rose life in sandy soil.

When should I prune my roses?

Late winter to early spring for repeat-blooming classes — January in coastal California, Florida, and low-desert Arizona; mid-February to early March in Georgia; late March into April in the Midwest and Northeast, after the worst freezes. The major exception is once-blooming old garden roses and once-blooming ramblers: they flower on last year's wood, so hard-pruning them in late winter removes the entire year's bloom. Prune those right after they finish flowering instead. Deadhead repeat bloomers through the season, then stop about six weeks before your first hard frost.

What is rose rosette disease, and can I save the plant?

Rose rosette is a viral disease spread by a microscopic wind-borne mite. Symptoms include bright red elongated shoots, dense witches'-broom clusters of distorted leaves, an abnormal excess of soft prickles, and buds that never open properly. It is fatal, there is no cure, and pruning out the affected canes does not stop it because the virus is systemic. Remove and bag the entire plant including the roots, do not compost it, and clear any wild Rosa multiflora nearby, which is the main reservoir.


Nothing else I engrave depends so completely on a name: the pruning class, the winter depth, the hardiness — none of it is visible in the plant standing in front of you, and all of it follows from which cultivar it is. Roses are where that matters most, and where losing it costs the most. The way a named cultivar disappears is almost never dramatic: one summer a cane comes up from below the bud union, it looks vigorous and healthy so nobody removes it, and two seasons later the plant is a dark red once-blooming 'Dr. Huey' and the original tag is long gone. The same goes for planting depth — the union that should have been buried four inches in an Illinois bed and left at the surface in a San Diego one is a decision you make exactly once, and it's easier to make correctly when the plant in front of you still has a name on it.

Bare-root rose season runs December through February across most of the country — noticeably earlier than fruit trees, and the window when the best cultivar selection is actually in stock rather than sold out. That's also the easiest time to order a marker alongside the plant, while the cultivar name and the rootstock are still printed on the box in front of you.

Rose gardens tend to get named — for whoever started the bed, or the year the first bushes went in — and that name usually lives nowhere but in the head of the person who tends it. I put those onto an engraved basswood plaque, bark edge still on the board, for the wall by the door people come through on their way out to the roses.
