Tropical Fruit Tree Care Guide: Mango, Avocado, Banana, Fig & Persimmon
Tropical and subtropical fruit is the category where the usual fruit tree advice stops working. Chill hours stop mattering. Bare-root season stops mattering. And the number that replaces them — a variety's cold tolerance — turns out not to be a single number at all. The same mango that shrugs off 30°F in its fifth year can be killed outright at 30°F in its first, and a well-watered tree going into a cold night behaves differently from a drought-stressed one. Most backyard tropical fruit that fails does so for one of three reasons: the wrong species for the site's cold floor, roots sitting in ground that drains too slowly, or a tree picked at the wrong moment and judged by the wrong signal.
Whatever you're growing, a permanent marker at the base is the simplest way to keep the cultivar, the rootstock, and the planting date on hand years after the nursery tag has faded. Between the heat, the humidity, and the salt air a lot of these trees live in, an engraved aluminum tag on a stainless steel stake is the version I'd put in the ground and stop thinking about.

Two mango cultivars standing ten feet apart can differ in their cold floor, in the signal that says the fruit is ready, and in whether a saved seed will ever come true — none of which is readable off the tree itself. Did you know? A banana plant isn't a tree, and it doesn't have a trunk. What looks like one is a pseudostem — tightly rolled leaf sheaths packed around each other, with no woody tissue anywhere in it. Botanically, a banana is a giant herb, which is also why the whole above-ground plant dies back after fruiting once and is replaced by a sucker from the rhizome.
1. What "tropical" actually means for your yard
The species people group together as "tropical fruit" span an enormous range of cold tolerance, and sorting them into three tiers is more useful than treating them as one category.
- True tropicals — mango, papaya, starfruit, pineapple, lychee. Damaged in the low 30s, killed not far below. In the continental United States these are landscape-reliable only in South Florida and a few of the very warmest, most protected coastal California and low-desert pockets. Everywhere else they are container plants that come indoors.
- Subtropicals — avocado, banana, most citrus. Tolerate light frost, with a wide spread by variety and race. Banana is a special case: the pseudostem dies well before the rhizome does, so the plant regularly "dies" each winter and returns each spring across a much wider range than its leaf hardiness suggests.
- Hardy subtropicals and tropical-adjacent temperates — fig, olive, Asian persimmon, pomegranate, mulberry, pawpaw, maypop passionflower. These handle real winter cold, several of them down into single digits or below, and they are the reason a gardener in Illinois or Georgia can still grow something from this list in the ground.
Three things move a species' actual cold floor away from the number on the tag: age — a first-year tree can be five to ten degrees more vulnerable than the same tree at maturity; duration — a half-hour dip to 30°F is a different event from eight hours at 30°F; and hydration — a tree watered thoroughly a day before a cold night comes through better than one going in dry. Treat published hardiness figures as bands for healthy, established, well-watered plants, not guarantees.

2. Grafting, seed, and why sourcing decides the next ten years
Why grafted at all?
Mango and avocado, the two species that show up most often in the orders I engrave for, are both propagated by grafting for the same reason apples are: a seedling is a genetic lottery ticket, not a copy of its parent. Beyond preserving the cultivar, the rootstock does real work — it controls vigor and ultimate size, and it determines how the tree copes with the ground it's actually planted in, which in this category usually means soil that is too alkaline, too salty, or too slow to drain.
The other reason to buy grafted is time. A grafted mango or avocado typically begins bearing in roughly three to five years. A seedling can take eight to twelve or longer, because it has to pass through a juvenile phase first — and at the end of that wait the fruit may be nothing like the one the seed came from.
The seed exception worth knowing
Mango and some avocado varieties have polyembryonic seeds — a single seed containing more than one embryo, where the extra embryos are clones of the mother tree rather than the product of pollination. Sprout one of those and you can get a true-to-type tree without grafting. Monoembryonic seeds, which include most of the Indian-origin mango cultivars, produce only a single seedling and it will not come true. This is a real distinction, not a technicality, and it explains why "I grew it from a seed and it's exactly like the original" is sometimes true and usually isn't.
The rest of the category is propagated in ways that have nothing to do with grafting at all, and knowing which applies changes what you should be buying:
- Fig — rooted cuttings or air layers. Figs root so readily that grafted figs are uncommon, which also means no graft union to worry about and no rootstock suckers to police.
- Banana — division of suckers ("pups") from the rhizome, or tissue culture. Never seed, for edible varieties.
- Pineapple — the crown twisted off a store-bought fruit, or an offset from an existing plant.
- Papaya — grown from seed, and fast: fruit in under a year is normal. Seed is the standard method here, not a compromise.
- Olive — cuttings for named cultivars such as 'Arbequina' and 'Kalamata'; seedlings are unreliable and slow.
- Asian persimmon — grafted, usually onto Diospyros lotus or American persimmon rootstock. The rootstock choice affects cold hardiness and suckering, so it's worth recording.
- Mulberry and pawpaw — named cultivars are grafted; seedlings vary widely in fruit quality and, for mulberry, in size.
On any grafted tree in this group, the graft union sits low on the trunk and should stay above the soil line. Anything sprouting from below it is rootstock, and removing those shoots as they appear is the difference between keeping the cultivar you paid for and slowly losing it. 3. Planting and drainage — the quiet killer
More backyard tropical fruit is lost to root disease than to cold, and the losses are less obvious because they happen slowly. Avocado is the clearest case: Phytophthora cinnamomi, avocado root rot, is the single most damaging problem the species has worldwide, and it is a disease of wet, poorly drained, poorly aerated soil more than a disease that arrives on its own.
The practical response for avocado, mango, and papaya on any soil heavier than a well-drained loam is to plant high. Build a broad mound six to eighteen inches above grade and several feet across, and set the tree on top of it so the root zone drains laterally instead of sitting in a hole that behaves like a bucket. On genuinely heavy clay, a raised bed or a large container is a more honest answer than a mound.
As with any tree, dig the hole to fit the roots rather than pruning roots to fit the hole, and resist heavily amending the backfill — native soil, loosened but not enriched, encourages roots to move outward rather than circling in a rich pocket. Mulch generously but keep the mulch several inches back from the trunk. Avocado in particular responds well to a thick coarse mulch layer over its shallow feeder roots, and badly to mulch piled against the bark.
Soil pH is the other site factor that decides success quietly. Most of this group prefers slightly acidic to neutral ground, roughly 6.0 to 7.0. In the alkaline soils common across Arizona, inland Southern California, and parts of Florida's limestone belt, iron, zinc, and manganese become chemically unavailable even when they are physically present in the soil, and the tree shows deficiency symptoms no amount of fertilizer solves without addressing the chemistry.

4. Cold protection — what to actually do
Cold protection in this category is a set of decisions made long before the forecast, plus a short list of things worth doing on the night itself.
Before the season: site the tree where it will benefit from a warm microclimate — the south or southeast side of a building, under high overhead canopy rather than open sky, away from low spots where cold air pools. Overhead canopy matters more than most people expect, because radiational cooling on a clear, still night is what does the damage, and anything overhead slows it.
Through autumn: stop pushing new growth. Soft, actively growing tissue is the first thing lost to cold, so late-season nitrogen and late-season hard pruning both work against you. Let the tree harden off.
On the night: water thoroughly a day ahead — moist soil holds and releases meaningfully more heat than dry soil. Cover the plant with fabric rather than plastic, draping to the ground so the cover traps ground heat rather than just wrapping the canopy. On young trees, banking soil or mulch over the graft union protects the part that matters most: if the top is lost but the union survives, the cultivar survives with it. For banana, mounding mulch deeply over the rhizome is the whole strategy — losing the pseudostem is expected and survivable.
After the event: wait. Cold damage takes days to weeks to fully declare itself, and cutting back too early removes wood that would have recovered while also exposing more tissue to the next cold night. Prune damaged growth only once new growth has begun and you can see clearly where the living tissue ends.
Container culture is the legitimate answer everywhere north of the reliable zones, and it isn't a consolation prize. Dwarf banana varieties, papaya, pineapple, container figs, and dwarf citrus all fruit in pots. The pattern is the same everywhere it's done well: outdoors from last frost through autumn, indoors near the brightest available window over winter, watered much less while dormant.
5. Watering
Newly planted trees in this group need frequent, consistent moisture through the first year or two while the root system establishes — for most, two to three waterings a week in warm weather, enough each time to wet the root zone thoroughly rather than just dampening the surface. Check by feeling the soil a few inches down before watering again rather than watering on a fixed schedule.
Watering needs don't end after establishment, they change shape. A mature tropical fruit tree needs consistent moisture during two windows every year, and drought stress in either one costs that season's crop even on an otherwise healthy tree: while flowers are setting fruit, and again as the fruit sizes up in the weeks before harvest. Between those windows, most of this group tolerates a drier interval well, and several actively prefer one.
Three species deviate from that pattern enough to name individually. Avocado has a shallow, oxygen-hungry root system and wants frequent, moderate watering with excellent drainage — never a deep soak into ground that holds water. Banana is the heaviest water user on the list by a wide margin and will show stress quickly in dry heat. Mango is the exception in the other direction: a dry period ahead of flowering actually helps induce bloom, and heavy irrigation during flowering can reduce fruit set rather than improve it.
6. Fertilizing
Skip fertilizer at planting. The tree needs to establish roots first, and pushing top growth before the root system can support it produces soft tissue that is both cold-vulnerable and disease-prone. Begin light feeding the following growing season.
Feeding continues every year after that, but the amount and the emphasis shift as the tree matures. Frequent light applications through the warm season suit this group better than one heavy annual dose, and feeding should taper off well before the first expected cold so the tree isn't carrying tender new growth into winter. A tree that is already growing vigorously and cropping well doesn't need the same feeding as one that isn't — it's worth reducing or skipping a year rather than feeding on autopilot, and a soil test every three to four years is the honest way to check whether the requirement has actually changed.
Two species-specific notes that matter more than general guidance. Banana is an unusually heavy potassium feeder and will underperform without it. On alkaline soils, the limiting nutrients are almost never nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium — they are iron, zinc, and manganese, which the soil chemistry locks away. Chelated micronutrients applied to the soil, or foliar applications during active growth, address the symptom; lowering pH addresses the cause, and is a slow, ongoing project rather than a one-time fix.
7. Pollination and fruit set
This is where the category diverges most sharply from temperate fruit, and where a tree that looks perfectly healthy fails to produce for reasons that have nothing to do with care.
Avocado has one of the more remarkable flowering systems in cultivated fruit. Each flower opens twice — once functioning as female, closing, then reopening later as male — and cultivars are sorted into Type A and Type B by which phase happens in the morning and which in the afternoon. In theory that means an A and a B planted together set more fruit than either alone. In practice, in most home gardens a single tree still crops acceptably, because the timing overlaps under real-world temperatures. 'Bacon' is a Type B; 'Hass' is a Type A; pairing them is the classic combination if there's room for two.
Papaya is the one where the plant's sex genuinely decides whether you get fruit. Plants come as male, female, or hermaphrodite. Males never fruit. Females fruit only if a male or hermaphrodite is nearby. Hermaphrodites are self-fertile and are what commercial growers plant, which is why the standard home advice is to start several seedlings and remove the males once they flower and reveal themselves.
Mango is self-fertile, but its fruit set is temperature-sensitive in a way that surprises people: cool, wet weather during flowering suppresses both pollinator activity and pollen viability, and it encourages anthracnose on the flower panicles. In marginal climates a mango can flower heavily every year and set almost nothing, and the cause is the weather during those two weeks rather than anything done wrong.
Fig is simpler than its reputation. Common figs — 'Black Mission', 'Brown Turkey', and nearly everything sold to home gardeners — set fruit without pollination at all and need no partner and no wasp. Only Smyrna-type figs require caprification, and they are rarely sold outside commercial contexts.
Banana and pineapple both produce fruit without fertilization, which is exactly why the fruit has no viable seed. Olive is wind-pollinated and, while some cultivars are partially self-fertile, most crop meaningfully better with a second cultivar nearby. Asian persimmon varies by cultivar — several of the common non-astringent types set seedless fruit without a pollinator.
When you have a 'Hass' and a 'Bacon' side by side, or three mango cultivars that look identical from ten feet away, the answer needs to live at the tree rather than in your memory — a large acrylic stake with an engraved QR code keeps the name in front of you and this guide one scan away.
Did you know? Mango belongs to the Anacardiaceae, the same family as cashew, pistachio — and poison ivy. The sap in the stem and skin contains related compounds, which is why some people develop a contact rash from handling freshly picked mangoes or pruning the tree, while eating the peeled fruit causes them no trouble at all.
8. Pruning
Pruning here happens in two phases, and the goals are different enough that treating it as one job produces a poor result.
Years 1–3, structural pruning
The aim is a strong framework and a manageable ultimate height, and the single highest-value habit is tipping. Cutting back the growing tips of a young mango or avocado forces branching low on the tree instead of allowing a tall, bare central stem with all the fruiting wood out of reach. Fig is usually trained to an open center for light penetration; Asian persimmon to a modified central leader, because its wood is brittle and wide-angled scaffolds fail under a heavy crop; olive to an open vase.
Year 3 onward, maintenance pruning
The focus shifts to removing dead, damaged, and crossing wood, opening the canopy so light and air reach the interior, and holding the tree at a height you can actually harvest and cover. Timing is the part most often gotten wrong: prune after harvest and well before the cold season, never in late autumn. A tree pushed into fresh growth by a late pruning goes into winter carrying exactly the tissue least able to survive it.
Through the growing season, remove rootstock suckers and vertical water sprouts as they appear rather than saving them for a single annual session. Banana runs on a different logic entirely — each pseudostem flowers once and dies, so the maintenance job is thinning suckers to leave roughly one fruiting stem, one well-grown follower, and one small pup at any time, and cutting the spent stem to the ground after harvest.

9. Training forms and multi-grafted trees
Espalier and columnar — mostly not the story here
Espalier is the practice of training a tree to a flat plane against a wall, a fence, or a run of wire, and it works beautifully for apples and pears because those trees fruit on long-lived spurs. A permanent framework can be held for decades without cutting away next season's crop. Very little in this guide behaves that way. Mango and avocado carry their crop on recent growth and want a canopy with depth to it; Asian persimmon has brittle wood that breaks rather than bends; banana has no woody framework to train at all. I would rather say plainly that espalier is a poor fit for most tropical fruit than describe a form nobody should attempt.
Fig is the exception, and it is a real one. Figs tolerate hard training, root so readily from cuttings that a failed experiment costs almost nothing, and respond to a warm south- or west-facing wall the way marginal-climate fruit always does — the radiated heat stretches the ripening season and buffers a frost night. A fan is the form to use rather than tiered horizontal cordons, because a fan allows the annual renewal of young wood. Where a fig is borderline standing in the open, a fig on a warm wall often is not borderline at all. As with any trained form, it is the summer cutting back of the current season's growth that builds the shape; winter pruning alone just produces vigorous shoots.
Columnar deserves a clarification rather than a section. The truly columnar habit — a narrow trunk fruiting on short spurs, needing almost no pruning — is genetic, and it traces to a single mutation found on a McIntosh tree in British Columbia in the 1960s. It is far better developed in apple than in any tropical fruit. Narrow tropical fruit trees exist, but they are the product of rootstock choice and pruning rather than genetics, so read "columnar mango" as marketing.
Multi-grafted tropicals — where this genuinely pays
Multi-grafted trees come in two kinds and the distinction matters. One is several cultivars of the same fruit on a single trunk. The other is several different fruits on a single trunk, which is only possible inside a compatible group — citrus types inter-graft freely, but you cannot graft a mango onto an avocado. In this category the useful version is almost always the first.
A multi-cultivar mango is common in Florida and it earns its place. Mango cultivars ripen across a long season, so three or four of them grafted onto one trunk spreads the harvest over months instead of dropping the whole crop inside three weeks. For a yard with room for one mango, that is the difference between fruit you can eat and fruit you have to give away.

Avocado is the strongest case for a multi-graft anywhere in this series, and the reason sits in section 7. Avocado flowers open twice, functioning as female in one phase and as male in the other, and cultivars are sorted into Type A and Type B by which phase falls in the morning. Grafting a Type B limb onto a Type A tree puts the pollination partner on the same trunk, in a yard with room for exactly one avocado. Be clear about what that buys, though: the two flowering periods still have to overlap for it to do anything at all, and a single tree of either type usually crops acceptably on its own. This is a fruit-set improvement, not a guarantee.

What the seller does not mention
Vigor imbalance is the main failure mode, and it bites harder here than on an apple. Growth in a subtropical climate is fast, so a dominant limb takes over in two or three seasons rather than five or six, progressively shading and starving the rest until a four-in-one is quietly a two-in-one. Managing it means pruning the strongest limb harder than feels natural, every single year, and being willing to do that to the limb carrying the best fruit.
Losing a limb loses that cultivar permanently, because it cannot regrow from the trunk. Grafted cultivars can also want different pruning from each other, and they ripen weeks apart, which turns harvest into a series of visits rather than one afternoon. And the labeling problem is acute for mango, where a dozen cultivars look essentially identical in leaf. Once the nursery tag fails, nobody standing at the tree can tell which limb is which, and the only durable fix is recording the cultivars and their positions on something that outlasts a plastic tag.
10. Harvest — reading the fruit instead of the calendar
Myth: if it isn't soft and ripe on the plant, it isn't ready to pick. For a large part of this category that instruction is exactly backwards, and for avocado it is impossible to follow. Avocados do not soften on the tree. The fruit reaches maturity and then simply hangs there, sometimes for months, and only begins to ripen once it has been picked. Waiting for a soft avocado on the branch means waiting forever — or until it eventually drops and rots. The same picked-firm principle governs mango, banana, and papaya, all of which finish ripening off the plant.
The reverse is equally true and equally consequential. Pineapple, fig, starfruit, and mulberry do not get sweeter after picking. Their sugar content is fixed at harvest. A fig picked early stays a mediocre fig no matter how long it sits on the counter, and a pineapple picked green stays sharp and acidic.
The practical signals, species by species:
- Mango — ignore color, which is cultivar-dependent and unreliable. Watch the shoulders: on a mature fruit they fill out and rise level with or above the stem attachment, where an immature fruit slopes away from it. A faint fruity aroma at the stem end and a slight give confirm it. Pick with a short stem attached and let the sap drain away from the fruit.
- Avocado — maturity is cultivar-specific and largely a matter of season plus fruit size, so the reliable method is to test one: pick a single large fruit and hold it at room temperature. If it softens evenly within three to ten days, the rest are mature. If it shrivels or turns rubbery, it wasn't ready and you have your answer without losing the crop.
- Banana — harvest the whole bunch when the individual fingers plump out and their angular ridges round off, well before any yellowing. Cut the bunch and ripen it hanging in shade.
- Papaya — pick when roughly a quarter to a half of the skin has turned yellow. It finishes on the counter in a few days.
- Fig — ripe on the tree or not at all. The neck softens, the fruit droops downward instead of standing out from the branch, the skin may split slightly, and a drop of nectar often appears at the eye. A fig that resists a gentle tug isn't ready.
- Pineapple — shell color shifts from green toward yellow or gold at the base first, and a sweet aroma develops at the bottom of the fruit. Leaf-pulling is not a reliable test.
- Starfruit — pick when the fruit has turned fully yellow and the raised edges of the ribs have just begun to brown. Picked greener, it never develops the same sweetness.
- Asian persimmon — this depends entirely on type, and getting it wrong produces a memorably unpleasant mouthful. Non-astringent cultivars such as 'Fuyu' and 'Fuyugaki' are eaten firm and crisp, like an apple, once fully colored. Astringent cultivars such as 'Hachiya' must be left until they are jelly-soft throughout; eaten firm they are mouth-puckeringly tannic.
- Mulberry — the ripe fruit falls at a touch. Spreading a sheet under the tree and shaking the branches is genuinely the standard harvest method, not a shortcut.
- Pawpaw — yields to gentle pressure like a ripe peach, develops a strong tropical aroma, and separates from the branch with a slight tug. It bruises easily and does not keep long.
- Olive — harvest timing depends on the intended use rather than a single ripeness point: green for table curing, fully black for oil, with the middle stages between. Raw olives of any color are inedible straight from the tree — curing in brine, salt, or water isn't a flavoring step, it's what removes the bitter compound that makes them unpalatable.
Every one of those signals is read differently, so what has to be right at the tree is which species and which cultivar you are standing in front of — a large three-line acrylic tag gives the species, the cultivar, and the planting year a line each, readable with fruit already in your hands.

11. After the harvest
Once picked: the split between fruit that continues ripening and fruit that doesn't decides how you store everything in this category.
Mango, avocado, banana, papaya, pawpaw, and astringent persimmon continue to ripen off the plant. Hold them at room temperature until they reach eating condition, then refrigerate to slow things down. Refrigerating them while still hard is a common and costly mistake — chilling injury arrests ripening permanently in mango and avocado, and the fruit never recovers, ending up leathery or grey inside instead of ripening. An avocado goes in the refrigerator only after it has softened, not before.
Pineapple, fig, starfruit, mulberry, non-astringent persimmon, and citrus do not ripen further. Refrigerate these immediately. Figs and mulberries are among the most perishable fruit you can grow and are best eaten within a day or two, or frozen — spreading them on a tray to freeze individually before bagging keeps them from crushing each other.
A few extras worth knowing. Bananas ripen fastest hanging and in company, because the ethylene they release accelerates the whole bunch; separating fingers slows it. Green papaya and green mango are both legitimate ingredients in their own right rather than failures, which makes an early or storm-forced harvest salvageable. And olives, again, need curing before they are food at all.
12. Diagnosing problems
- Avocado in slow decline — small pale leaves, thinning canopy, dieback from the tips, no obvious pest — almost always Phytophthora root rot from poor drainage. Improve aeration and drainage; a tree already in visible decline is difficult to recover, which is why planting high matters so much up front.
- Blackened, sunken spots on mango flowers, young fruit, or leaves in wet weather — anthracnose, the main reason mangoes fail in humid climates. Improve airflow through the canopy, clear fallen debris, and expect worse years in wet springs.
- Yellowing between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green — iron or manganese deficiency, usually caused by alkaline soil locking up nutrients rather than an absence of them. Chelated micronutrients help; soil pH is the underlying issue.
- Heavy flowering every year with almost no fruit set (mango) — typically cool or wet weather during the flowering window rather than a care failure. Siting for warmth and airflow helps; some seasons simply don't cooperate.
- A papaya that flowers profusely and never fruits — it's a male plant. No treatment; replace it, and start several seedlings next time so you can select.
- Banana leaves shredding along the ribs — wind, and entirely normal. It looks alarming and doesn't harm the plant. Persistent yellowing of older leaves progressing upward is a different matter and usually points to potassium deficiency.
- Fruit dropping when small, across several species — some natural shed after flowering is normal and healthy. Heavy drop usually traces to water stress, a sudden temperature swing during set, or a nutrient shortfall.
- Sunken, corky, or cracked patches on the sun-facing side of fruit or trunk — sunburn, common in low-desert and inland climates. Whitewashing exposed trunks and keeping enough canopy to shade the fruit both help; over-thinning the canopy is often the cause.
- Whole-canopy browning after a cold night — cold damage. Wait for new growth before pruning, so you can see where the living tissue actually ends rather than guessing.

It's a multiple fruit — dozens of separate flowers arranged around a central stalk, each developing its own small fruit, all of which fuse together as they grow. Why won't my avocado ripen on the tree?
It can't. Avocado is one of the few fruits that will not soften while still attached — the fruit reaches maturity and then simply holds on the branch until picked, sometimes for months. Ripening only begins after harvest, so the tree itself is effectively the storage. Pick one large fruit and see whether it softens evenly within three to ten days; if it does, the rest of the crop is mature.
Can I grow a mango or avocado from a seed I saved?
You can grow a tree, but usually not the same fruit. Most avocado seeds and many mango seeds are monoembryonic, meaning the seedling is a genetic cross rather than a copy, and it will take eight to twelve years or more to fruit. Some mango and avocado varieties have polyembryonic seeds that do produce true-to-type clones, but a grafted tree fruits in roughly three to five years and removes the guesswork entirely.
What temperature will actually kill my tropical fruit tree?
There isn't one fixed number. Published cold tolerance figures assume a healthy, established, well-watered plant, and three things shift the real threshold: age, since a first-year tree can be five to ten degrees more vulnerable; how long the cold lasts, since a brief dip differs greatly from an eight-hour freeze; and soil moisture, since a well-watered tree comes through better than a dry one. Papaya and pineapple are the most tender on this list; fig, olive, persimmon, mulberry, and pawpaw are the hardiest.
My papaya flowers constantly but never sets fruit. What's wrong?
It's almost certainly a male plant. Papayas come as male, female, or hermaphrodite, and males flower freely without ever producing fruit. Females need a male or hermaphrodite nearby to set; hermaphrodites are self-fertile on their own. The standard approach is to start several seedlings and remove the males once they flower and identify themselves.
Can I grow tropical fruit somewhere that freezes every winter?
Yes, with the right approach. Fig, persimmon, mulberry, pawpaw, and maypop passionflower all handle real winter cold in the ground. Banana regrows from its rhizome each spring across a much wider range than its leaf hardiness suggests if the rhizome is mulched deeply. Everything more tender — mango, papaya, pineapple, dwarf citrus — grows well in containers that summer outdoors and overwinter near a bright window.
The cold floor for one of these trees was never a single number — it moves with the tree's age, with how long the cold sits, and with how well watered it went into the night. What doesn't move is the cultivar, so that is the first thing I ask for on a tropical fruit marker, along with the scientific name, the rootstock, and the year it went in the ground. That matters more in this category than in most, because so much of what determines success here is fixed at purchase: whether an avocado is Type A or Type B, whether a persimmon is astringent or not, whether a mango came from a polyembryonic seed or a graft. None of that is visible on the tree, and the nursery tag will be illegible long before you need the answer.
Tropical and subtropical fruit doesn't follow the bare-root winter season that governs apples, pears, and stone fruit. Most of this group is sold containerized and establishes best planted into warm soil in late spring through summer, once the last frost is comfortably past — which makes spring the natural time to order a marker alongside the tree.

A grafted mango or avocado can take five years to hand over a first fruit, and that date deserves better than a stake at the base of the trunk. I engrave a basswood plaque for it — the cultivar, the year it went in, the year it finally fruited — to hang indoors, where none of the heat and salt air that wears out everything outside can reach it.
